MEXICO – Chiapas

23:00 Friday November 13th, I leave for a week-end in Chiapas with a group of 20 people. Located in the south east of Mexico, it is the southernmost state bordered by Guatemala.

The bus ride was 12 hours, we arrived Saturday at 11:00 am at the Cañon de Sumidero, a narrow and deep canyon surrounded by a national park. We embarked onto a little boat and saw some impressive landscapes & even a crocodile.

We then went back to the bus and drove to San Juan Chamula, a cute little village with a beautiful church.
After this we went to the hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas, played some beer pong & went out to party Mexican style.

On Sunday, we left in the morning to visit the Lagunas de Montebello, a national park comprising 59 lakes.

We saw Lago la Encantada which means the enchanted lake, it was named like this because the bodies of those who died there were never found. The legend says on thursdays & fridays you can hear the screams of the dead.

The Lago Esmeralda, named after its color, also has its legend. It is said a woman appears there and disappears when people try to approach her.

We walked through an artesanal market that sold typical Guatemalan souvenirs.

On Monday, we went to the Cascadas de Agua Azul where we were able to swim for a bit.

We then visited Palenque, the ruins of an ancient Mayan city which was absorbed into the jungle & has since been excavated and restored and is now a famous archaeological site, one of the pyramids was in the process of being excavated.
